Perform an improvised soap opera online during lockdown. A kitchen sink drama in your actual kitchen!
This is a brand new online course from James Witt, director of Dreamweaver the improvised dream musical and This is Soap the improvised soap opera.
We’ll be forming a team over 4 weeks and improvising a selection of various soap opera styles such as Neighbours, Eastenders, Coronation Street, Dallas, Dynasty, Casualty, Hollyoaks, Brookside, Telenovela.
We’ll be exploring various soap opera techniques including emoting, melodrama, gossip, character secrets, character types, relationships, romantic scenes, affairs, love triangles, story and explosive drama!
We’ll then be putting it all together in one big fun online show of improvised soap opera!
Designed for people with previous long-form improv experience.
This course is online:

- On the day of the first workshop we will email you log-in for the zoom chat.
- You click on the link in the email to join the zoom chat and enter password.
- You will just need a laptop with camera and internet connection, everything else will be in the link. Laptops work better than ipads and phones for improv over Zoom.
- Don’t worry if you haven’t used Zoom before, we start the first session with an overview of how to use it.

Dates: Every Tuesday for 4 weeks from Tuesday 26th May 2020, plus online show on Tuesday 23rd June 2020.
Time: 7pm – 9pm each week.
Price: £115. Reduced to £95 for NHS workers or if your income has been reduced by lockdown.

james witt
James is co-director of Dreamweaver Quartet, Hoopla’s most popular show.
He previously directed This is Soap the improvised soap opera at The Edinburgh Fringe.
He trained in Musical Theatre at Guildford School of Acting and Drama at the University of Birmingham.
He founded Dreamweaver Quartet in 2017 and has rapidly grown it to be one of London’s most popular improv shows.
Other credits include NewsRevue, Music Box, Newsical, Shakespeare for Breakfast, Story Kitchen, News Revue and hit Edinburgh show Brexit the Musical as Boris Johnson.
TV and film credits include Secret Diary of a Call Girl, The Infidel, White Teeth and Murder in Mind and also appearing as comedy idol Eric Morecambe in commercials.
In addition, James regularly teaches, performs and writes satirical short films with Hoopla.

Who is this suitable for?
People with previous long-form improv experience who want to explore performing improv online.
How much improv or acting should I have done before doing this course?
You should have done at least our Long-Form Improv Course or a similar amount of improv somewhere else. This course is not suitable for people totally new to improv or acting.
What comes after this course?
We have a variety of other advanced improv courses that would be suitable.
What if I’m running late?
We’ll be starting each session at 7pm. This is an advanced course and we’re trying to form a team, so please don’t book this course if you are likely to be late on a regular basis.
What’s the class size?
Maximum of 12.
Where are the course shows?
Streamed online via Hoopla's facebook page /HooplaImpro and also facebook group Hoopla Impro People.
What do I need to take part?
Laptop with camera and an internet connection. Laptops work better than phones or ipads, but phones and ipads also work.
Do I need to sign up to Zoom in advance?
No. On the day of the workshop we email you with all you need for zoom.
When do you email the Zoom link to take part?
On the day of the first workshop.
Can I transfer to this from my booking for a real-life course that has been postponed?
Yes. We don't have the tech on our website for you to do this automatically, but email [email protected] if you would like to do this and we will move your booking and payment over and refund you any difference.
Will this course keep going online if lock-down stops earlier than expected?
Good question! It looks likely that won't happen but if lockdown finished before the end of the course we'd happily refund you for the remaining workshops if you can't make them. It will finish as an online course.
