tomes with Chris Mead

The adventurous new show format.

At Hoopla we do the classic improv formats like The Harold, Deconstruction, Improvised Musical and Narrative, but we also aim to inspire improvisers to explore new directions with innovative new show formats like Tomes.

This is a totally new course to Hoopla and a new show format to the UK, taught by one of the UK’s best teachers Chris Mead.

Chris learnt the format on his improv travels around North America, and has been eager to introduce it to these shores because it weaves narrative, improvised theatre and adventure together into one awesome show experience.

In the show the team of improvisers enter the stage with a trunk full of paperback fantasy adventure novels collected together from hidden second hand bookshops, charity shops and forgotten attics.

The audience choose a book and the cover, description and first paragraph inspire the show, with the improvisers creating the rest of the novel live on stage in one huge multi-scene show.

Expect action, adventure, dragons, mythical lands, fantastic characters and epic stories.

Chris will be working with the cast to create a full theatrical experience including props, costumes and soundtrack building up to a fantastic show.

This course is only for people with previous long-form improv experience. If you haven’t got long-form improv experience please start at one of our earlier levels.
