truth in comedy
With Chris Mead.
6 week course with Chris Mead inspired by his training with iO Chicago.
For experienced improvisers who want to immerse themselves in the origins of Chicago style long-form improvisation and discover truth in comedy.
Topics over the course will include Agreement, Support, Trust, Patterns, Themes and Relationships. Most of all we’ll be exploring being honest on stage and using our full selves in the present moment.
Instead of going for the quick jokes we’ll be playing the reality of the scene and improvising moment to moment with what feels honest and true there and then.
Chris will be creating a really supportive team where you feel confident to express yourself and use your true feelings and life experiences in scenes.
This style of improvisation feels liberating for the performer, and creates fantastically rich and funny scenes for the audience.
There’s nothing funnier than the truth.

Who is this suitable for?
Experienced improvisers who want to explore the Chicago style of long-form improvisation and truth in comedy.
How much improv or acting should I have done before doing this course?
Ideally our level 4 course or a similar amount of improv somewhere else. This course is not suitable for people totally new to improv or acting.
What comes after this course?
We have a variety of other advanced improv courses that would be suitable with themes like Story, Musicals, Harold, Improvised Singing and more.
What’s the class size?
Limited to 15 people. Average of 12-14 people.
Is there an end of course show?
No. We want to focus on the theme and thought doing a show format on top of it may be distracting. We do have various performing opportunities at Hoopla though and are happy to help any groups that form from the course.
What if I’m running late?
We’ll be starting each session at 2pm. This is an advanced course and we’re trying to form a team, so please don’t book this course if you are likely to be late on a regular basis.
What if I can't make all of the workshops?
Please don't book the course if you are likely to miss more than 2 workshops. This is an advanced course with topics building on each other week on week, so please don't book the course if you are likely to miss more than 2 workshops.
