Explore exciting themes from the world of fantasy adventure including:
- Monsters, creatures and species.
- Journeys, locations and maps.
- Characters and protagonists.
- Quests, traps and devices.
- Storytelling and adventure.
- Mythology, folklore and fantasy.
- World building.
We will then be putting it all together into a brand new improvised fantasy show with costumes, audience inspired maps, fantasy characters, magical elements and exciting stories.
You don’t need to know anything about the genre before, but will need previous long-form experience.
Taught by Katy Schutte (with cover guest teacher for one week), one of the UK’s most experienced long-form teachers and performers and author of The Improviser’s Way: A Longform Workbook.

Katy is one of the UK’s original long form improvisers. She trained at Second City and iO Chicago and with teachers from The Annoyance, UCB, Groundlings, The Magnet and more.
She performed and taught improv with The Maydays since their founding year of 2004 with stints as Director and Artistic Director, she is half of sci improv duo Project 2 and is the author of The Improviser’s Way: A Longform Workbook, one of the main UK texts on long-form improv.
Katy also currently performs improv with Yes Queens, Hell Yeah and Track96. She has also previously performed improv with Baby Wants Candy, Katy & Rach, Fluxx, The Playground, Messing with a Friend, Criminal, Grand Theft Impro and more.
She performed multiple shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe including her Ghostbusters themed musical “Who Ya Gonna Call?” which received rave reviews.
She coaches long form teams across the world. Katy was one of the first people to teach the rest of the Hoopla team, and inspired us to create various shows.
Katy recently won Best Script Award Feature Script Grand Prix and is nominated for Best Feature Film at Golden Art Film Academy. She is a Funny Women finalist and winner of the Brighton Festival Fringe Best Comedy Show award. She starred in online educational series History Bombs which won a BAFTA and in Project2’s Thirteen Cycles which was a finalist in Theatre and Technology Awards 2019.

Who is this suitable for?
People who've done at least our Level 4 Long-Form improv course and want to explore improvising fantasy adventure.
How much improv or acting should I have done before doing this course?
You should have done at least our Level 4 Long-Form course.
Do I need to have done narrative before?
No. You need to have done long-form before but you don't need to have done any narrative.
Do I need to know anything about the genre in advance?
No. You don't need any previous experience of the genre to take part, and in fact a lot of the genre we will be devising together as a team over the course.
What comes after this course?
We have a variety of other advanced improv courses that would be suitable with themes like Story, Harold, Truth in Comedy, Character and more.
What’s the class size?
Maximum of 16, average of around 12-14 per class.
Is there an end of course show?
Yes.
Do I have to perform in the end of course show?
No. The show is optional and you'd still get lots from the course without doing the show.
