Playback Theatre Workshop

Playback theatre is a unique form of improv with storytelling at it's core.

Audience members are invited share their stories and watch them become theatre on the spot. Stories are brought to life using metaphor, music, comedy, empathy and many other tools.

All stories are welcome, whether happy or sad, ordinary or extraordinary; we are all our stories. When we share our stories it connects us like nothing else can.

Suitable for everyone. No previous improv or acting experience required.

- Exploring the main forms, techniques and ritual of playback in a fun and nurturing environment.

- Listening to a story and finding its core.

- How to turn a story into a play and how to play with a story.

- Music and singing in playback.

- Creative metaphor in stories.

- Listening and empathising with an audience.

- Various playback theatre forms and exercises.

- Performing different emotional themes.

Reviews and Testimonials:

Victoria Howden

Victoria is the founder of Plays of Our Lives.

She is a Playback performer, actress and psychodrama therapist.

She trained at the international school for Playback theatre and was an actress with one of the most well-known Playback theatre ensembles in the world Play-Life in Tel Aviv Israel.

The first time she went to a Playback theatre performance she told a story and the way it was played back blew her away and changed her life and from that point she wanted to do the same for others.

She is a firm believer in the power of stories as a tool that can help make this world a better place.

Jane Beavis

Jane has trained and performed with Playback theatre companies in New Zealand and the U.K.

She loves the form of playback and sense of community it can bring to an audience.

Jane has been a teacher for many years in varying capacities, mostly drama, and also teaches improvisation to teenagers in her local community.

Jane has trained in a variety of improvisation styles with Hoopla, Imprology, The Maydays and IO Chicago, as well as psychodrama, drama therapy and play therapy.

Jane is a creative workshop facilitator and is passionate about playback, improvisation, and the expressive arts therapies and she loves nothing more than to share these passions and have fun while doing it.

“If improvisation floats your boat you should head to Hoopla. There’s fewer better ways to see what spur-of-the-moment comedy London has to offer.”

A: Yes there’s a lunch break around 1:30pm and also a few smaller breaks over the day.

Q: Is there a follow up?
