Game of the Scene Workshop

A one day workshop focussing on The Game of the Scene with Maria Peters.

How to perform funny scenes that follow a fun pattern and delight the audience.

Capitalising on what the funny thing is in the scene and playing and escalating it to make fun playful scenes.

If you haven’t done any improv or acting before it’s best to start with our Beginners Improv Course or Beginners Improv Class first.


- Fun warm ups.

- Quick session on back to basics improv exercises including listening, yes and.

- The simplicity of structuring your scene.

- Exploring, heightening and escalating.

- Capitalising on what the funny thing is in the scene.

- Looking at the patterns that the audience what want to see again to find it funny.

- Spotting the first thing that the audience has laughed at and the underlying offer.

- Peekaboo! Taking the game away before you do it again.

- Performing scenes that the audience find delightful.

- Keeping the scene going.

- Doing more of what the audience enjoy, without overdoing it.

- Giving a ‘why’ to the scene.



Q: Who is this suitable for?

A: People who’ve done some improv or acting before and want to have some fun focussing on Game of the Scene.

Q: Do I need previous improv experience?

A: Yes. If you haven’t done any improv or acting before it’s best to start with our Beginners Improv Course first or Beginners Improv Class.  

Q: How much previous experience?

A: Not loads, just a one day Beginners Improv Class or similar would be fine.

Q: Is there a lunch break?

A: Yes there’s a lunch break around 1:30pm and also a few smaller breaks over the day.

Q: Is there a follow up?

A: Yes we do a variety of different Saturday workshops that go together with this really well. Also our long-form course would also be a good follow up as this also focusses on scenes.

Maria Peters

Maria Peters is an improv veteran, recently back from intensive training at IO Theatre in Chicago.

Maria is currently performing in Breaking & Entering, improvised long-form with Lauren Shearing, and also produces The Playground.

She's worked with some of the world’s finest teachers of improv such as the legendary Keith Johnstone, Baby Wants Candy, the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York & Chicago’s famous IO.
