Guest Teachers The Penny Dreadfuls, Impro to Script Workshop, Sunday 24th January 2010.
The Penny Dreadfuls met in 2002 performing and directing impro with The Improverts, Edinburgh University’s resident impro troupe. They then moved on to write and perform sketch and narrative comedy together. Their first show at The Edinburgh Festival, Aeneas Faversham (2006) proved to be a hit. Their style of Victorian themed comedy continued with their follow up shows Aeneas Faversham Returns (2007) and Aeneas Faversham Forever (2008). These shows achieved almost 30 five-star reviews between them and a number of awards including Best Comedy Show at the Brighton Festival in 2008 and the Three Weeks Editor Award for excellence in 2007, and went on to tour the UK. They then went on to record two excellently reviewed radio series, The Brothers Faversham, on Radio 4 and BBC 7, as well as appearing on television. Last summer they premièred their new show at the Edinburgh Festival, The Never Man, which marks a step away from their previous Victorian work. This was again met with critical acclaim including 5 star reviews from Three Weeks and Latest 7. So how did they do it? Well, Hoopla have booked them in to find out! Kevin has previously lead some shorter mask workshops with Hoopla and The Crunchy Frog and we've been crying out for more more more. Kevin will be teaching a wide range of mask techniques including half-masks and full-masks, as well as areas of Commedia dell'arte. He’s spent the past decade working extensively with Keith Johnstone in both the UK and Canada and has become an expert in teaching masks and long form. Kevin’s current show ‘Seven Ages’ was created with the help of Keith Johnstone and won 5 star reviews at last year’s Edinburgh Festival. The workshop is open to all and will be strictly limited to 16 people so you'll get to do lots. kevintomlinson.co.uk Date: Sunday 4th October 2009 Time: 11am - 5:30pm Maximum number of bookings: 16 Price: £55 Where: The Bedford, Balham. Kevin Tomlinson, Scene work and Long form Workshop, Saturday 18th July 2009, The Bedford, Balham.
Kevin has previously lead some shorter drop-in workshops with Hoopla and The Crunchy Frog and we’ve fallen in love with him - so much so that we’ve invited him along to lead a whole day session in July.Kevin has a charming teaching style that gets you going to deeper places in a fun and caring way. He makes normally complicated concepts seem simple and creates a really positive workshop. He’s spent the past decade working extensively with Keith Johnstone in both the UK and Canada and has become an expert in teaching masks, long form, and other areas that don’t seem to get covered much in the UK. Kevin’s current show ‘Seven Ages’ was created with the help of Keith Johnstone and won 5 star reviews at last year’s Edinburgh Festival. Kevin is going to be leading a workshop primarily on scene work and long form impro. This workshop is only suitable to people who have done some impro before. Date: Saturday 18th July 2009 Time: 10:30am - 5pm Maximum number of bookings: 16 Price: £55, with limited places of £80 for both workshops. Where: The Bedford, Balham. kevintomlinson.co.uk John Cremer, Saturday 4th July 2009, The Bedford, Balham
We’re very honoured to welcome John Cremer, director of The Maydays in Brighton, to lead a one off session in Balham.John was the first ever impro teacher Steve and Edgar learnt from, and inspired a lifelong passion for improvisation. This is the guy we turn to when we’ve really lost the plot, as he always gets us on the right track and enjoying ourselves again. He really brings the best out of people, and creates the most supportive learning environment we know. John is also an expert on reading people, so gives you what you actually need in the moment - rather than a set of predetermined impro exercises. John first learnt improvisation from the legendary Louis Anthony Russo in Arizona. After returning back home to Brighton he set up The Maydays and has enjoyed years of successful workshops, shows, and corporate training. The Maydays are currently performing the critically acclaimed 'Argus! The Musical' to audiences across the South Coast. More recently John has been spending summers in Chicago learning new stuff from people like Marshall and Nancy from Zenprov, Annoyance Theatre, and Improv Olympic. Usually you’d have to go to Brighton or further afield to do a workshop with John, but for one day only he’s going to be in our little corner of Balham. We’re going to limit the class size to just 12 people so you have a full day of getting involved with everything. If you want to get yourself back into that chilled out yet confident, happy and carefree mode of impro where content flows out of you like a river over a waterfall, then this is the workshop for you. Date: Saturday 4th July 2009 Time: 11am - 5:30pm Maximum number of bookings: 12 Price: £55 for this workshop only, with limited places of £80 for both workshops.
