South East Essex College

In 2009 Steve and Edgar teamed up with stand up comic and "So You Think You're Funny" finalist Rob Broderick to teach a series of improvised comedy workshops for performing arts students at South East Essex College. This involved running full day workshops for 30 BTEC National Diploma students, as well as 15 BTEC First Diploma students.

Exercises and topics included impro fundamentals (listening and acceptance), stretches, group mirroring, various levels of acceptance of offers, yes and, finding the where, who and what of the scene, emotional reactions and status.

The workshops proved to be very successful with staff and students and Hoopla will be working together with South East Essex College on a longer series of impro workshops in the 2009/2010 academic year, including additional rap and musical impro sessions.

Imperial College

Steve recently taught a session on Improvised Narrative for the students of the MSc in Science Media Production at Imperial College London.

This full-time one-year MSc course is for people with science, technology or medicine backgrounds, or graduates from other backgrounds with substantial experience in a scientific environment, who want to develop careers communicating science in broadcast media, probably in documentary or other factual programming.

The interactive impro session formed part of their Narrative module, and proved to be popular enough for Hoopla to be invited back to teach more sessions in the 2009/2010 academic year.
