Chestnut Grove

In 2007 Edgar and Steve organised and taught a full day of improvisation to over 40 secondary school students and sixth formers from four different schools and colleges in collaboration with the Drama Coordinator from Chestnut Grove School in Balham.

The day came about as the Head of Sixth Form at Chestnut Grove was keen to get different schools in the area working together, and thought drama would be the perfect medium. We were amazed by the high standard of acting shown by all the students, and their enthusiasm at throwing themselves into totally new games.

Brief Timetable for the Day:

Period 1: Whole group introduction to improvisation and warm ups.
Period 2: Impro fundamentals workshop with Steve and Ed.
Period 3: Impro games with Ed. Status, Character and Narrative with Steve.
Period 4: Impro games with Ed. Status, Character and Narrative with Steve.
Period 5: Whole group impro session. This became an impromptu show with the students performing their favourite games from throughout the day.

We had an exercise list as a guide, but as with all our workshops we modified this on the day depending on the students needs. Some exercises were played as a whole group or in pairs, to maximise the time spent practicing, and some were performed to the rest of the class to help students to feel comfortable in front of an audience. As always we tried to minimise our explanation of theory and games to an efficient level, to maximise the time students spent practising.

At the end of the day we also advised interested students about setting up their own groups and how to get more involved with drama and impro. We have also continued to advise the Drama Coordinator, to help her to continue to use impro in her classes and after school clubs.
